01 / Why this work matters

A Paris still life carries a Chinese cosmos

This tiny painting places a violin beside the Eight Trigrams and a taiji diagram. The objects are not rendered with academic volume. They sit like signs on a pink field, held together by incised contours, a striped lower band, and the reflective support of a mirror.

The combination is more than an easy East-West symbol. A European instrument, an ancient cosmological diagram, and a modern domestic surface become equally available shapes. Sanyu treats cultural references as parts of one lived visual vocabulary rather than as opposites to reconcile.

02 / Formal analysis

Five ways to read the visible evidence.

Move from color and composition toward the material surface and the space the work asks you to inhabit.
01

Color and light

The violin reduced to a continuous, almost calligraphic contour

02

Composition and rhythm

Scratched lines that let the mirror support interrupt the paint

03

Line and gesture

The bagua ring behaving as both symbol and bold abstract circle

04

Surface and material

The combination is more than an easy East-West symbol. A European instrument, an ancient cosmological diagram, and a modern domestic surface become equally available shapes. Sanyu treats cultural references as parts of one lived visual vocabulary rather than as opposites to reconcile.

Historical interpretation

Sanyu, 1929/1932

The combination is more than an easy East-West symbol. A European instrument, an ancient cosmological diagram, and a modern domestic surface become equally available shapes. Sanyu treats cultural references as parts of one lived visual vocabulary rather than as opposites to reconcile.

Ink-trained line, Parisian modern life, the nude, flowers, and animals are compressed into radical economy.
