01 / Why this work matters

Body and carpet occupy the same plane

A back-turned figure stretches horizontally across a yellow tapestry. Sanyu suppresses conventional depth: the carpet rises behind the body like a field of color, and tiny decorative signs sit on its surface without obeying scale or perspective.

The pose is erotic yet withheld. The face disappears into a compact black knot of hair, while a thin pink contour carries the body from shoulder to foot. Figure, textile, and painted ground become one continuous ornamental structure.

02 / Formal analysis

Five ways to read the visible evidence.

Move from color and composition toward the material surface and the space the work asks you to inhabit.

Historical interpretation

Sanyu, 1930s

The pose is erotic yet withheld. The face disappears into a compact black knot of hair, while a thin pink contour carries the body from shoulder to foot. Figure, textile, and painted ground become one continuous ornamental structure.

Ink-trained line, Parisian modern life, the nude, flowers, and animals are compressed into radical economy.
