01 / Why this work matters

An auspicious flower becomes a nocturne

White peonies emerge at irregular intervals from a mass of leaves that nearly disappears into a blue-black field. A glass vase is described by a few dark lines, and the tabletop is a single ochre plane. The arrangement feels abundant and austere at once.

Peonies traditionally signal wealth and honor, but Sanyu drains the motif of ceremonial display. The late palette turns the still life into a meditation on visibility: blossoms flare briefly, leaves recede, and the transparent container seems barely able to hold them.

Historical interpretation

Sanyu, 1950s/1960s

Peonies traditionally signal wealth and honor, but Sanyu drains the motif of ceremonial display. The late palette turns the still life into a meditation on visibility: blossoms flare briefly, leaves recede, and the transparent container seems barely able to hold them.

Ink-trained line, Parisian modern life, the nude, flowers, and animals are compressed into radical economy.
