01 / Why this work matters
Calligraphic energy expands into a panoramic field
At nearly two metres wide, Composition no. 554 lets Chu distribute energy across bodily scale. Dark structures gather, separate, and rejoin while light opens passages through them. The viewer cannot take in the work as a single emblem; the eye must travel, pause, and change direction.
Chu had resumed calligraphic practice around 1971, and the painting translates that renewed discipline into spatial orchestration. A stroke is never isolated. Each one answers the density, interval, and direction of its neighbors, allowing the whole canvas to breathe like an extended phrase.
